Joel Embiid provides much-needed quarterfinal performance

Philadelphia 76ers center. Joel Embiid, is often at the center of a lot of unwanted attention. A lot of it is deserved, and is usually something that he brings upon himself. From being out of shape, making odd choices that go against team chemistry, and not being all-in, most of the criticism is deserved. Especially for someone of his talent level, fans expect a player of his caliber to have something of a 'Mamba Mentality'.

At this point, he is closer to a nine-to-five worker who is actively looking to exploit every labor loophole to not have to show up at the office. The extent of his injuries is not what should be questioned. They happen, especially for someone with his body type. Instead, critics often point out how he approaches rehab, and, in general, puts himself in the best position to help his team. But the most recent criticism against him is completely unfair.

As with many players, the big man had a tough choice when deciding which national team program to play for. Numerous athletes, particularly in soccer, face a decision, often between two or more good options. He had equally valid claims to play for either the United States, France, or Cameroon.

The only difference is that the turned-down party is usually not the host for the Olympic games after a long, public saga. Fast-forward to the most recent US win over Brazil. Joel Embiid got the start, and received his usual sea of disapproval from the French attendees.

Except this time, he was able to parlay his antics and adverse relationship with the home crowd into a strong performance. Joel Embiid finished with a strong 14 points, and seven rebound outings. Furthermore, the efficient 5-6 from the field and defensive presence allowed him to show how he can be one of the better players in the world, when the circumstances are right.

Antics show Joel Embiid will never change

Joel Embiid continues to show why he is both is a great option for Team USA and one of the better players when healthy in the world.

This led to the gesture that quickly made the social media rounds. In the 122-87 win, the focus post-game was on a certain 'movement' that indicated just how the 76ers player felt about the constant jeers. Normally, something like this indicates selfishness. But considering everything that led up to this point, his reaction is entirely justified.

It still shows that a lot of what concerns non-Philly fans about the All-Star will remain true; that hasn't gone away. But for someone who has been through the intensity during the buildup and throughout the Olympics, it's understandable. His taunting comes, after looking to just suit up and play.

Yes, he has had moments of playing into the disapproval, but for the most part, the center has done an excellent job of blocking out the noise. In a moment of what would otherwise be described as mental weakness, Joel Embiid earned the right to punch back, a reward for pushing through and showing why all of the personal attacks have been coming at him in the first place.
